Ballads are not just slow, sad songs, they can be joyful and upbeat as well. McNamara’s Bar is a story song of community, acceptance, tolerance and joy that is often found in the humble Irish bar.
Lyrics
It’s just up on the main street, It’s got a yellow door
It never had a carpet, just some sawdust on the floor
You’ll mostly hear a fiddle, a bodhran and guitar
As you enter the establishment called McNamara’s Bar
They don’t do fancy cocktails or bottles of champagne
But once you have some craic there you’ll be coming back again
They serve goodwill and joy that’s from an ancient reservoir
I hope that you’ll be joining us at McNamara’s bar
Now mostly people gossip that it’s all about the drink
But it’s the clientele that really make you stop and think
The bar stool intellectuals arrive from near and far
They solve the problems of the world in McNamara’s bar
Of course they serve a drink or two that’s how they pay the rent
You’d have to say the people here are mostly heaven sent
There’s atheists and buddhists and a nun who smokes cigars
All laughing with the great unwashed in McNamara’s bar
Now some of you prefer your church and listen to your priest
But didn’t Jesus tell us pay attention to the least
So in the place we congregate we don’t eat caviar
We’re sure the Lord is with us all in McNamara’s bar
