It is our usual morning routine when we are home in Ireland for Kylie to swim in the Irish Sea and Sammy to walk in the nearby woods and pathways. He was literally ‘sauntering’ when the chorus came into his head and he sang it on his phone. He did nothing else with it but shared it with Kylie who brought it to Mercyland Songwriter’s Workshop Ireland and sat with Jeff Carson and Sheila Easson. Together they finished it. Sauntering is kind of walking slowly, relaxed, and in no hurry, but this had other connotations attached to it like the idea of pilgrimage and personal reflection.

Lyrics

I will saunter, saunter, on the path they have travelled before me
I will saunter, saunter, and the journey will one day restore me
And the journey will one day restore

Foot to the path, nose to the grindstone
Chasing the dream, the next biggest thing
Lost in the noise
Battling chaos, having my mind tossed
No where to cling
Standing on shoulders of those gone before me
Mothers and fathers and mystics of old

Moving and chasing, no real direction
Weary and worn down, nothing to show
Gaze in the mirror, see the reflection
There’s no perfection
Let it all go
Standing on shoulders of those gone before me
Mothers and fathers and mystics of old
